Piston Compressor Practicum

The work of the piston compressor is done by the process of suctioning and compressing an amount of air in the cylinder during the working step. The air is compressed polytropically so that an increase in pressure and temperature are occurs. Compressed air from the cylinder exits through a pressure valve into a lower pressure system. This up and down motion of the piston produces a semi continuous flow cycle. The installation test is shown in Figure 1. From this figure you can see the layout of the measuring instrument and the main components of the equipment. Figure 2 shows a schematic drawing of the test installation and the measurement station that is the place of measurement.

The piston compressor is driven by an electric motor. The power transmission used is the power belt transmission. Mechanical work done by the motor can be found by measuring motor torque and motor rotation measured by a tachometer. Air conditions at important places can be determined by measuring their pressure and temperature. Humidity of the air in and out of the compressor can be found from psychrometric diagram after the temperature of the wet and dry balls is known. The air flow rate is measured using an orifice and manometer.
